school is a nightmare that keeps me away from doing all the fun and interesting things i’d normally be doing…yesterday i spent 11 hours coding a stupid medical application at the brickyard building while some stupid arts and crafts festival was going on outside. can’t wait for summer:

been writing alot of music lately. cant wait to actually sit down and work on it.
totally excited about going to oregon with ash
lookin forward to pressing some more tapes and a 7inch later this summer.
can’t wait to NOT have a math class at 7:30am where they take attendance.

maybe i can even read another book this summer?

have a good memory of discovering this in high school. i remember putting this in my portable cd player and chillin by the greenbelt late one night. there were no cars that drove past and there were a few ducks chilling on the pond. the album completely flipped what i understood of music on its head; at first i was intrigued, i laughed at all the funny voices and enjoyed all the spacey jams. I remember visualizing a giant green grid showing historical documentary videos in rewind with the cast of mystery science theater narrating the story between songs. I loved zappa’s production work and his anything goes attitude. I stepped in an anthole somewhere near the King Kong jam at the end and had to stumble home with an swollen itching heel.

Just finished:

- Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert Pirsig

- Sealed Off by Zhang Ailing (short story)

Just started:

- The Woman in the Dunes by Kobo Abe

Pirsig’s Zen… started off really strong. The main character explains some really rational ideas that I totally agreed with during the first half of the book. I really enjoyed his statements on technology and the futility of “professional” academia. I also enjoyed the idea that striving for Quality in all aspects of life is the only thing worth living for. Unfortunately the book took a wrong turn somewhere about 3/4ths of the way through. It gotta kinda psuedo-philosophical and tried arguing alot of ideas that, to me at least, seemed kinda pointless and silly. I really wanted to like this book completely, but the last like 80 pages were so dull and hard to get through that I kinda lost interest.

Zhang Ailing’s Sealed Off is a really nice short story. It reminds me of a something similar to a Fellini or a Juenet/Caro film. I really enjoyed the surreal treatment of Japanese occupied Shanghai. The story’s ending normally would bug me…. I usually hate most things that get written off as a dream at the end of a story, but the author’s choice of vocabulary made this a worthwhile read. The author touches on sacrificing personal happiness for the sake of doing what society wants. Both main characters, momentarily drawn together, dream of how different their life could become….but are pulled back into their own realities by the cold ‘ding’ of the tram car which they have been sealed off in.
